Scholars–Frequently Asked Questions

If you have additional questions please contact Don Bard, Coordinator of Undergraduate Honors and Research Opportunities at ugrdhnrs@ucsc.edu.

I’ve recently been selected as a Koret Scholar, what do I do now?
First, congratulations! Now, you can start working on your research or creative project. You should coordinate with your mentor throughout the process. We will be sending email notifications to you regarding professional development opportunities, and important dates to keep in mind.

I have some expenses associated with my research project, including the cost of printing my research poster. Are these expenses reimbursed?
Some research expenses may be covered by your faculty mentor. In addition, up to $500 of the $2,000 award to each 2019 Koret Scholar was designated to cover the cost of research expenses. Research expenses, including the cost of poster printing, should be budgeted from the $2,000 award.

I have a faculty mentor. Do I need to apply for independent study with them, or is there one assigned by the Koret Scholars Program?
We do not assign the independent study. You take a 2- or 5-credit independent study assigned by your faculty mentor. The two of you agree on whether it would be two or five credits.

If your mentor is a graduate student, you are not required to apply for independent study.

Is there a format or guidelines I should follow for submitting my final "report"?
Your final report is really a "reflections" statement. You will be asked to answer a number of questions about your research experience as a Koret Scholar. More information about this final "reflections" report will be sent to Koret Scholars via email just before the end of the program.

What’s the Koret Scholars Undergraduate Research Slam?
The Koret Scholars Undergraduate Research Slam is a poster symposium event where Koret Scholars have the opportunity to showcase the research or creative project that they have been working on alongside with their mentor. Each Koret Scholar will work with their mentor to design and print a research poster displaying their project. The 2019 event is scheduled for June 7, 2019, during Student Acheivement Week.

Am I required to participate in the Koret Undergraduate Research Slam?
Yes. It is expected that all Koret Scholars will participate in this event. We will be contacting you via email to take steps to confirm your participation and to provide details on on your project so that every Koret Scholar can be included in the event program.

What can I do to prepare for the Koret Scholars Undergraduate Research Slam?
We will be conducting a series of professional development workshops exclusively for Koret Scholars that address preparation for the Koret Slam. We highly encourage our scholars to participate in these workshops, and to seek guidance from their mentors.

Can I invite my family and friends to the Koret Undergraduate Research Slam?
Yes. The event is free and open to the public.
